The incredible run of injuries continued again last night. Glavine left early with an elbow injury and is on the DL. This afternoon word came down that Jurrjens sprained his ankle walking down the stairs last night after the loss and will miss his start and may have to go on the DL also.
So 4/5 starters listed on opening day are out with an injury, along with Moylan, Gonzalez and Soriano. We're also missing our starting centerfielder, and left fielder. We might as well be missing Francoeur with the lack of production we're getting from him.
I hate to wave the white flag so early, but things are not looking good. Every team has to deal with injuries, but this is absurd, and almost close to impossible to deal with.
On a positive note Morton will be called up this weekend and it will be exciting to see what he's got. I'll still be watching and rooting, but this is frustrating.

Frenchy and Politics
The Bravos pretty much put themselves behind the 8 ball for the time being with their sweep at the hands of the Phillies this weekend. A bad road trip over the next week and a half and this season could potentially be as good as done.
FRENCHY
Because I love Frenchy so much as a player/person it is difficult to watch him play so poorly. I am baffled as to why a player with so much talent cannot seem to hit better than this. It is reminiscent of the Andruw Jones days with the main difference in the fact that Frenchy is much smarter than Andruw and seems to want to learn and do well. From what I've heard, Andruw would listen sometimes but was very stubborn for the most part and difficult to coach. Although commentators and the like seem to enjoy picking on how much Frenchy swings at bad pitches, I don't feel that is the main issue. Not that I'm an expert but it seems obvious that 2 things are wrong, they are somewhat intertwined: 1. Frenchy has a large whole for pitches away, in particular pitches that are up or away. 2. This correlates with his poor timing, he seems to be getting started very early or very late. His average and power are not anywhere close to where they need to be. Either he is a head case, or Terry Pendleton is doing a terrible job with him.
POLITICS
With the 2 candidates set, the campaigning for president has begun and I've heard quite a bit about it from the news media. What I don't understand is why all we hear about is what the other side does wrong and what one side thinks is right. Where are the ideas/solutions to the major issues we face? Obama and McCain have given maybe 1 or 2 specifics on what they plan to do and then a lot of general rhetoric that is essentially meaningless.
Gas is $4 a gallon and all that is being done is arguing and stupid bickering. We have other countries drilling for oil just miles from our coast but American companies are not allowed to because of our nation's concern for the environment. We as a nation are blinded with concern for 'certain catastrophe' looming with this global warming issue. Guess what liberals, idiots, yes-men....Global Warming as we know it and its supposed causes is flat out BULLSHIT. I will not argue that there may be environmental issues that need to be addressed but Global Warming is not one of them. The same scientists that can explain the Ice Age and patterns of the earth's climate now somehow think that a trend of Global Warming is certainly our fault as human beings? How asinine are these people? Their are numerous fallacies in the evidence and much evidence to dispute the fact that Global Warming exists but now politicians from both sides almost all seem to agree we need to address this. We will waste billions of dollars in a sour economy with record gas prices to curb something that does not exist. I do not have the time or energy to go into specific examples of the problems with the argument that Global Warming exists but I challenge any sane person to research this on their own and see what they find.
The thing that baffles me the most though.... Al Gore championed this movement. The same bumbling idiot that claimed to invent the Internet.
Other than the stupid issue of Global Warming we have many other problems which or current politicians seem either unwilling or unable to solve. I feel disheartened with my choices for President and feel disgusted with our government. Bear in mind that I feel John McCain is a typical politician who will do little to nothing to help point our country in the right direction before I say this...
Barack Obama is the most frightening candidate I have ever seen for president. He is wrapped up in radically liberal ideas and will push these ideas onto Congress to put into action. Our country is in enough trouble, the last thing we need is an inexperienced Socialist running the show.
That is all I have to say for now. I feel better.

A recap and a rant
Its been quite a week for the Braves. The week started with the news that Smoltz was coming back and returning to the bullpen. We had a 1 run lead headed into the 9th, and the doors swung open and out comes Smoltz ready to lock it down. I got goosebumps seeing that again. Unfortunately, it wasn't a happy ending at all. Smoltz blew the save thanks in part to some shaky outfield play, but Escobar saved the day. Tuesday was impressive, we came from behind and picked up the first win when trailing after 7 innings all year.
Wednesday word leaked out the Braves scheduled a press conference with Smoltz and Bobby. This is never good. I went at lunch to watch the press conference and got the stomach punch we were fearing. He has to have another shoulder surgery, and some speculated this would be the end. As always Smoltz was defiant and plans on rehabbing and coming back if at all possible. I hope he can, he's one of the 5 greatest Braves and he deserves a better ending to his career. What's amazing is that he was hitting 95 mph even with a bum shoulder. To add insult to injury, in the game that day Manny Acosta (more on him later) gave up 4 runs in the 9th to blow the game for the Braves.
Thursday was fantastic. Another great comeback win from the Braves. But the true highlight of the night was Chipper Jones. 4/5 with this:
Career homerun 400. He hit the ball 1 section over from us. The reaction he got from the fans was fantastic and it was great to see him come out for a curtain call. Watching him right now is just an absolute treat.
And this brings me to my rant. We are far too talented to be a .500 team and struggling with runners on base. Last night was the perfect example of this. Yes, the game should have ended with an easy pop fly catch. It shouldn't have even gotten to that point where 1 run made a difference. Twice we had the bases loaded, and twice we came out of it with no runs. We had 3 runners thrown out at home, including a botched suicide squeeze, a botched sac fly and then a close play at the plate in the bottom of the 10th. It shouldn't be blamed on any one person, but Francoeur has drawn my ire, as he was the man that came up both times with the bases loaded, and both times he failed to drive in any runs.
I hate to question Bobby Cox, because he's great at what he does, but for the life of me, I do not understand why Frenchy continues to hit in the 5 spot. Chipper is getting on base 50% of the time. And Brian McCann his hitting over .300 and leading the league in doubles. Why not hit McCann behind Chipper, its going to increase the chances for McCann to drive in runners. Tex is going to have to start making more of his chances as well. Teams are starting to intentionally walk Chipper, and he's got to be more productive so teams will think twice about that.
Hopefully the team won't let last night affect them for the rest of the weekend, these close losses are so frustrating and in a tight race I really hope they don't come back to bite us in the ass.

Success at a Price
Well, the goal this weekend was to attend Saturday night's Braves game but getting tickets turned out to be quite an issue. We waited to get tickets at the gate and paid the price for it, the lihne extended for probably a 1/4 mile and it was decided that it was not worth it to wait in that line. Thus we ended up at a restaurant to watch the game.
Redemption came yesterday though as a last minute decision to attend the Sunday afternoon game was rewarded with a win. Jo Jo Reyes looked pretty good again and the Braves got a win. Frenchy still sucks, his poor play is beginning to become a problem and its really annoying me. Frenchy makes so many poor decisions at the plate, I think thats why he frustrates me so much.
We did sit in the 'Chop-House' during yesterdays game which was pretty enjoyable. We had a man-waiter bringing us beer all day, nothing better than that. Unfortunately, no Miller Lite on draft so I had to drink Bud Lite-I wasn't happy about it but I felt I had no choice. Apparently the Oakland A's do have some fans in Atlanta as quite a few were at yesterdays game. I never realized the trashiness of the A's fans, but they are quite the sight. One lovely young lady decided to wear some shorts that were about 4 sizes to small with a nice green tank top that was also way too small. She had fat rolls coming out everywhere, I literally almost vomited. As always w/ people like her, she thought she was hot. She strutted around like she owned Turner Field and kept her head high as if every guy was checking her out. Don't get me wrong, most guys would still hit it but it wasn't a pretty sight.
Now the Braves have got a pretty big stretch coming this week. The Mets come in town tomorrow and then the Diamondbacks this weekend. My record for the year is at a solid 5-2 and talks have begun to trying to stretch it to 6-2 tomorrow night. Nothing beats heckling Mets fans so it might get pretty ugly.

A Challenge for the Ages
The Braves lost 2 of 3 to the depleted Mets this weekend, it was pathetic and I don't have anything else to say about it.
There is however, a day of history on the horizon. There exists, in certain baseball circles, a legend of a feat of unimaginable proportions. This accomplishment is greater than hitting for the cycle, pitching a no-hitter, or hitting 4 home runs in a game. It is called 'a perfect game', and no it is not accomplished by a pitcher. This feat is defined as an individual eating 9 hot dogs and drinking 9 beers during a 9 inning baseball game. Rumors exist that it has been accomplished before but solid proof is difficult to find. The legend of the 'perfect game' rivals that of Babe Ruth's called shot, bigfoot, and the lochness monster.
Unfortunately, proving any of the 3 aforementioned legends is just short of impossible, however the 'perfect game' is a legend that can be attempted by anyone at any time. If accomplished it will bring history to life, it will inject new blood into Americana and the game we Americans adore.
Three men stand ready to challenge fate and destiny and place themselves atop the Mt. Olympus of amateur competitive eating. Contestant one: The Godfather, Matt T. Matt is a powerful and aggressive eater who thinks 'quit' is the dirtiest word in the english language. Contestant two: Corky. This man is the single most talented amateur competitive eater that walks the face of the earth. To discount his chances of eating anything is to laugh in the face of death. Contestant three: 8 ball. This man is an unpolished gem of competitive eating. He easily consumes more for leisure than most men eat their entire lives.
So the challenge is presented and 3 men will hopefully agree to attempt this awesome and supernatural feat. Our Atlanta Braves offer an 'all you can eat and drink' seat which will be the forum for these attempts. A date has yet to be set but the world will know once schedules have been worked out.

History part 2.
Last night was a little more history for the Braves. Brian McCann hit his first career triple. He displayed a great technique when sliding into third. It was a nice birthday present for Chipper who went 3/3 with a HR. Thanks to my pals at Walk off Walk for finding the video:

History
My partner in crime and I attended the game last night with the hope of witnessing something historic. John Smoltz came into the game only 4 strikeouts away from 3000, something that only 15 pitchers before him have done.
The crowd was small, as is usual for a weeknight game, but the atmosphere was more electric. Everyone was on their feet for each 2 strike count, anticipating 3000. And Smoltzie didn't make us wait long for it, getting it in the 3rd inning. They shot of some fireworks and inbetween innings we got a montage of Smoltz's other milestones.
Smoltz ended up with 10K on the night, the 2nd straight outing with 10Ks. Unfortunately the offense didn't show up and Smoltz took the L on the historic night.

Braves and Beer=A great weekend
My 3rd Braves game of the year was the most successful trip yet. A Saturday afternoon game lent itself for some heavy pre and post-game tailgating and quite a few Miller Lite's. We had a solid crowd of at least 10 people, most of whom are fantastic Braves fans and prodigious beer drinkers. Yesterday was an absolute clinic on how to tailgate for a professional baseball game.
The game itself was fantastic, another win for the red-hot Braves who after today's game have climbed back up to the .500 mark. Andruw Jones hit his 1st homer of the year, but that was about all the Dodgers did right all day. The Braves got a good outing out of Chucky James and the bats stayed hot enough for the Braves 3rd straight win. Chipper most cerainly enjoyed the standing ovations he got from our section with every plate appearance he had. Andruw probably didn't enjoy the ruthless heckling he received from one of our paying patrons, the Godfather. People around us didn't seem to like Andruw being booed but as the Godfather pointed out-"He was terrible last year, that's why I'm booing him. Plus I paid for a ticket, I can do what I want." I agreed whole-heartedly with this logic and supported his right to free speech.
Also, we had a cultural expert in the section. Some 50 year old fat guy appeared to be disturbed with our antics, most notably with our "aye,aye,aye" chants as Yunel Escobar came to the plate. He informed us that Yunel is Cuban, not Mexican and we certainly thanked him for letting us know. We did mention that they speak spanish in Cuba as well and Yunel chose a latino club song to play when he comes up to bat but that did not matter to the fat dude. He was disgusted with our behavior and was just looking to try and embarrass us. Little did he know, that isn't possible. We showed him that in more detail with a lot of man-contact, dancing, and a new tomahawk chop dance.
For anyone interested in this new phenomenom, it is called the 'tomahawk thrust'. It begins with both arms doing the tomahawk chop with the pelvis being thrusting simeoltaneously with the arms. Then one puts their hands behind their head and continues thrusting their pelvis in rhythym with the drum. Finally, one leaves one hand behind the head and takes the other arm and does a perfect sideways chop, all the while thrusting the pelvis. This dance will completely revolutionize anyone's Turner Field experience when it is done properly.
Anyway, I've got 3 games under my belt for the year and the Braves are 2-1. Looks like this could really turn into a great season. More to come...

A weekend of Bulldogs and Braves, not so much beer
So UGA looked great in my opinion on Saturday, even though the schedule is absolutely hideous this year, the team should be solid. As Buck Belue said about it 'you know you're in good shape when the head coach implies his only area of concern is the placekicker' position. Although the team does look good I am still trying to stay grounded, even pessimistic. The SEC is always the toughest conference and I have heard 'this is the year' quite a few times growing up as a fan. I was a year late on getting to see the last time it was 'the year' so I'm not wasting energy on anticipation anymore. If the team plays well and a few breaks go our way, who knows. If things don't go right we've still got a great young team and should be in good shape for the forseeable future.
The Bravos bounced back nicely this weekend, topping of a 'sweep' of the Mets by beating the golden boy, Johan Santana. Smoltz looked absolutely awesome which was good, but I am still concerned w/ his health. He doesn't need to be messing around with that shoulder and end up blowing it or his elbow out, that's Mike Hampton's job. It's way too early to say this but I'm saying it... If Chipper Jones plays 140 games and is moderately healthy, he will win the MVP this year. Hopefully a good road trip is on the way this week, a good win streak could really help set the tone for the season.
Oh and I forgot to update visit 2 to Turner Field for the year...

I am also happy to say that the Miller Lite flowed freely and they didn't run out this time. And w/ the luck already flowing for us, we ran into a friend who got us into the 755 club for the 8th and 9th innings. Not only is the view great from the club, they don't stop selling beer until something like 30 minutes after the game. Fortunately, the Braves pulled this one out to bring our record to 1-1 on the year as attending fans, not bad after going well below .500 last year.

The Season has Begun
The Braves are off and running and off to a disapointing 0-2 start but no worries just yet as they have 160 games to right the ship.
I had the good fortune to attend the opening home game for the Braves last night and although the outcome was not the desired one, a good time was had by all. Tom Glavine was back in a Braves uniform and looked pretty good on the mound. The crowd was much more supportive than I thought they might be with the exception of a good friend of mine who booed the living hell out of old Thomas. The disgust on people's faces as he booed Glavine and heckled him about being an AARP member is something I will not soon forget. Apparently Pittsburgh has fans as well as there was a group of 5 or 6 real winners cheering for the Pirates like it was the World Series. I have a feeling our group was about 2 beers shy each of causing a real flap with them but since we were moderately sober, nothing ensued.
The frustration of Manny Acosta's poor outing made us decide it was time to leave the game before the real fireworks began in the bottom of the 9th. I must say that had we stayed in the stadium, that would not have happened-Braves fans owe us for that. I heard the comeback on the radio and saw the replay, amazing. But in true 2008 fashion, we gave up another extra inning homer, I'm definitely glad I was not in the stadium for that.
Anyway, Spring means Braves baseball and I couldn't be happier. Hopefully, the boys will start putting together some wins so heading down to the 'Ted' will be more fun.
One final note...The beer vendors in the outfield all ran out of Miller Lite in the 6th inning, if they want my business they had better fix that ASAP. I'm not nearly as effective a fan drinking Bud Select.
I had the good fortune to attend the opening home game for the Braves last night and although the outcome was not the desired one, a good time was had by all. Tom Glavine was back in a Braves uniform and looked pretty good on the mound. The crowd was much more supportive than I thought they might be with the exception of a good friend of mine who booed the living hell out of old Thomas. The disgust on people's faces as he booed Glavine and heckled him about being an AARP member is something I will not soon forget. Apparently Pittsburgh has fans as well as there was a group of 5 or 6 real winners cheering for the Pirates like it was the World Series. I have a feeling our group was about 2 beers shy each of causing a real flap with them but since we were moderately sober, nothing ensued.
The frustration of Manny Acosta's poor outing made us decide it was time to leave the game before the real fireworks began in the bottom of the 9th. I must say that had we stayed in the stadium, that would not have happened-Braves fans owe us for that. I heard the comeback on the radio and saw the replay, amazing. But in true 2008 fashion, we gave up another extra inning homer, I'm definitely glad I was not in the stadium for that.
Anyway, Spring means Braves baseball and I couldn't be happier. Hopefully, the boys will start putting together some wins so heading down to the 'Ted' will be more fun.
